I want to start off with an extremely helpful computer program that I use all of the time! MasterCook is a ValuSoft program that I highly recommend! This program has recipes that are separated into cookbooks, but more importantly, it allows you to set up your own cookbooks. From there you can not only pull all of your preferred recipes together you can also see nutritional tables, adjust a recipe smaller or larger without having to keep track of the math, print copies, share copies and more.
I have had this program for a long time and I would not want to be without it. I have upgraded a couple of times and am about ready to do so again. My cookbooks are broken down into - breads, cakes, cookies, desserts, gluten-free, meals, quick breads, vegetables and one for pet treats and food. I have been able to take ingredients I have in my pantry and develop a dish based on nutritional values, so "a little of this and a little of that" is much more of a sure thing! I've also been able to adjust the size of a recipe based on the amount of some crucial ingredient when I can't go to the store to get more. I would love to have a tablet that has this program in it to have in the kitchen ready to be used, without having to go around the corner to my computer to read my recipe. I do copy out recipes and use the other side of the paper the next time around and then recycle the paper so it's good but... |
There is knowledge out there just waiting to be gathered
- PBS has some fantastic cooking shows, as do the cooking channels. Often you can go to their websites and print the recipes off. That allows you to watch and absorb the lesson and not get distracted by taking notes. While you may enjoy watching the cooking competition shows they are not going to help out much when trying to come up with dinner or a fantastic dessert.
- America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country along with the publication Cook's Illustrated are, in my opinion, the best resources out there. The Cook's Illustrated Magazine is both thorough and beautiful. The illustrations are truly works of art! The Note From Readers section is interesting and the Tips section is often very helpful. The articles and recipes are well researched, the explanations are well written and Christopher Kimball's editorials are delightful. Look for back copies to Cook's Illustrated at used bookstores or contact Cook's Illustrated and see if they can be ordered. Cook's Illustrated, P.O. Box 52372, Boulder, CO 80322-7320
- Probably my favorite site is King Arthur Flour. Before the website, when all there was was a catalog, I would pour over the pages and turn down corners on things I wanted. I still get the catalog but I am on the website almost everyday. The recipes cover everything from breads to soups and cookies to cakes. Their products are good too. I've ordered many items from them.
- The recipe book by Ed Wood World Sourdoughs From Antiquity is a favorite sourdough book of mine and Ed has collected, bred and dried sourdough starters from all over the world. This starters are available for sale at http://www.sourdo.com/all-products/
For you gluten-free folks out there I really like (and use) Jeanne's site. I found it more than helpful when I started cooking g-f for friends and family a few years ago. There are some great gluten-free and paleo sites and blogs out there so look around.
The Queen Creek Olive Mill in Queen Creek, AZ has several products that I like to use, one of which is their Aged Balsamic Vinegar. Here is their website, QueenCreekOliveMill.com check them out@!

Some recipe sites I like
https://honey.com/recipes offers up some great recipes using honey. The Honey Bread Pudding with Honey Cream Sauce is no longer listed here, so I am glad I saved it!
