Give me a book and just see what I can do
I love reading cook books. I love reading cook books as much as any other book and I read a lot! Some cook books have stories along with recipes and other's have no prose, none! It does not matter to me. I look through cook books anywhere and everywhere, if they have more that two recipes that I want I will buy them or put them on my wish list. I have a lot of cook books!
I will write recipes down on scraps of paper and tuck them away to use later. I also bookmark recipes in my cookbooks with bits of paper or sticky notes. Many of my cookbooks look a bit like porcupines
I bookmark recipes online and have several folders saved. My fear is if my computer crashes I will not be able to find them again.
I look for books that are out of print at used bookstores and on Amazon. It's a treasure hunt...good luck! I do have cookbooks that are not listed below and you may have favorites you would like to share. Drop me a line below.

My First Cook Book
Betty Crocker's New Good And Easy Cookbook Golden Press New York, 1962 ISBN 62-15434
I got this for Christmas in 1970 from my parents. The brownies on pg. 122 have made me a favorite of many! I have truly never found a better brownie and I have looked. This is a great book for kids to learn with but it isn't just for kids.

My Most Influential Baking Book
the Tassajara Bread Book by Edward Espy Brown Shambhala Publications, Inc., 1970 ISBN 0-87773-025-3
This book taught me how to make bread. I had been baking bread for years before I got it, but from these pages I learned to bake bread. I have always preferred to make bread using the sponge method, which this book utilizes, as it reduces the amount yeast used. I do not care for a strong yeasty tasting bread. I often use the techniques in this book for other recipes.

H.P. Books/Fisher Publishing, Inc., 1978 ISBN 0-89586-007-4
With this book I was able to cook for 100 kids and adults seven days a week, with one day off every two weeks, at Camp Whispering Pines Girl Scout Camp. I have also been able to put varying meals in the freezer and pantry in my home for many years. Having home-made mixes made with ingredients you are comfortable with (and can pronounce) is sweet. There is also a second volume and a new release with updated recipes that are more heart healthy with smaller recipes for smaller families.

This book is my first choice go-to-book for cooking vegetables. There are helpful hits for growing, choosing veggies and preparing vegetables. As I am not a big fan of cooked vegetables when I decided that I need to work on eating more veggies this books was of great help to me.

My Cookbooks that cover cooking and baking
FLATBREADS & Flavors A Baker's Atlas By Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid 1995 William Morrow and Company, Inc,. New York, N.Y.
ISBN: 0-688-11411-3
One summer, once my niece and nephew were out of school, we poured over this book, chose recipes, read about the area the food came from. We pick several of the peoples and did additional research using National Geographic and the internet. Each week we made bread and one or two of the sides to go with them and shared the food and our discoveries of the people and the regions with our family.
Reading, math from measuring, sometimes halving or doubling a recipe, geography, social studies. Writing a report and making a presentation (even if it was a the dining table with a mouthful of food sometimes) and the armchair adventure of looking at the wide world we live in and a look at how these people who live so far away, in conditions so different from ours and yet are so relate-able to us.
The Hungry Hiker's Book Of Good Cooking By Gretchen McHugh Alfred A. Knofp New York, inc. 1982 USBN 0-349-51261-8
I will never buy packaged backpacking food again! Well maybe the freeze dried ice cream. There are fantastic tips and recipes for making homemade meals that taste "fresh" just like you make at home. Use the recipes in the book and convert your own favorites and hit the trails or waterways! I used the plans for making a custom dehydrator and use it regularly. Dehydrated foods are not just for the trail. Use these great idea to "put up" foods from your garden or those great buys at the grocery store when space in freezers & pantries are tight.
As of September 23, 2017 Amazon has several copies for about $6.00

My Own Cook Book a compilation of the recipes that I use regularly
I use Kitchen Secrets Your Personalized Recipe Record Copyright 1962
It is no longer in print but there are many options out there. A personal cookbook with 3-ring-binder system makes it easy to add pages and to rearrange things in a order that makes sense to you. I also recommend using this type of cookbook for your favorites/regulars because it will kept your other cookbooks in nicer shape. You are not always cooking with them on the counter, picking up spills and splatters. I have three, one for breads, one for cakes, cookies, etc. and one for food. They are broken down into categories making recipes easier to find. I have found that recipe boxes do not work for me because you have to take out the recipe card, then they never get put back properly or in a timely manner.
