We often think of barley as something that only goes in soups but it is a very good side dish also! Try to purchase hulled barley which is a whole grain rather than pearl barley which is considered a "white grain" the flavor is nuttier and the grain is a little bit chewier but not tough.

White Rice |

You do not need a rice cooker to cook rice! A good pan with a lid that fits and a good understanding of how your stove top works and you will do just fine! If you make a lot of rice then a rice cooker is a great purchase but you will want to use one at least once a week to justify the cost, as well as, the precious kitchen counter space it will live in. If you have to pull it out from under the counter each time you use it, it probably will just sit and collect dust.
I like to cook up a double or triple batch of rice when I have time and portion out the rice into zip style bags and freeze for later use. A quick dinner or rice pudding perhaps.
